Why Most PDF to Word Converters Are a Privacy Risk

Most free PDF converters work by uploading your file to a remote server, converting it there, and sending it back. That sounds fine until you read the fine print: many services retain your files for 24-72 hours, some use them for quality assurance, and a few have been caught storing sensitive documents indefinitely. For resumes, contracts, financial reports, or personal documents, this is an unacceptable risk.

FixMyDocs converts your PDF entirely in your browser. The conversion happens using PDF.js (Mozilla's open-source PDF reader) and the docx library, both running as JavaScript in your browser tab. Your PDF never travels over any network connection. There is nothing to intercept.

How the Conversion Works

When you upload a PDF to our converter, here's what happens locally in your browser:

  1. PDF Parsing: PDF.js reads the binary PDF structure and extracts the text content, font metadata, and basic layout information.
  2. Structure Detection: The extracted content is analyzed to identify headings, paragraphs, bullet points, and table structures.
  3. DOCX Generation: The docx library reconstructs this content as a properly formatted Word document with matching paragraph styles, font sizes, and document properties.
  4. Download: The final DOCX is handed directly to your browser's download system. Nothing is stored.

Common Use Cases

Editing a Received PDF

You receive a report, proposal, or contract as a PDF that you need to edit or annotate. Converting to DOCX gives you a fully editable Word document. After editing, convert it back to PDF using our DOCX to PDF converter.

Converting a PDF Resume for ATS

Some older Applicant Tracking Systems (especially Taleo and SAP SuccessFactors) parse Word documents more reliably than PDFs. If you only have a PDF resume, convert it to DOCX, then run it through our ATS Resume Optimizer to ensure it's structured correctly for automated screening.

Extracting Content from Old Documents

Old PDF reports, archived documents, or downloaded forms often contain valuable text that you need to repurpose. Converting to Word extracts all the text into an editable format that you can copy, restructure, or reformat.

Making a PDF Editable for Collaboration

PDFs are read-only by design. When you need to share a document for editing and feedback in Google Docs or Microsoft Word, converting to DOCX first makes collaboration seamless.

PDF vs. DOCX: Key Differences

Understanding the fundamental difference between these formats helps set expectations for any conversion:

  • PDF (Portable Document Format): A fixed-layout format. Content is positioned absolutely on a page. It looks identical on every device but is not designed for editing. Text, images, and layout are "frozen."
  • DOCX (Word Open XML): A flow-based format. Content reflows based on the page size, font, and margins. Designed for editing and collaboration. Text and styles are fully editable.

Because PDFs "freeze" their content at absolute positions and DOCX reflows content dynamically, some layout information (exact column widths, precise image placement, custom page decorations) may not transfer perfectly. Text content is always preserved accurately.

After Converting: Clean It Up

PDF to DOCX conversion sometimes introduces minor formatting quirks: extra line breaks, inconsistent font sizes, or broken heading hierarchy. After conversion, run your DOCX through the Doc Refine workspace to automatically normalize spacing, fix heading levels, and produce a clean, professional document ready for sharing or editing.

Legal Documents and Contracts

Need to convert a PDF contract to Word for redlining or clause editing? After conversion, use the Legal Mode workspace to restructure the clauses, normalize language (shall/will/must), and flag any ambiguous terms. The combination of PDF conversion plus AI legal analysis is a powerful workflow for legal teams.
